Load Security
Load security is a critical responsibility for all BHA drivers. Poorly secured loads can shift during transit, affecting vehicle stability, damaging goods, and creating serious risks to the driver and other road users.
Driver Responsibilities
- Ensure loads are secure before starting a journey
- Check load stability during transit
- Use appropriate restraints
- Report unsafe loading immediately
How to Secure a Load Correctly
- Prevent movement in all directions
- Place heavy items low and evenly
- Minimise empty space
- Ensure restraints are tight and undamaged
Types of Load Restraint
- Ratchet straps
- Load bars
- Protective padding
- Edge protectors
Weight Distribution
- Keep weight centred
- Avoid uneven loading
- Do not exceed limits
In-Transit Checks
- Listen for movement
- Re-check on long journeys
- Stop if load shifts
Common Failures
- Loose straps
- Unbalanced loads
- Unsecured items
Operational Standard
If a load cannot be secured safely, the journey must not begin. Safety always takes priority over time or convenience.
